Red River Retreat

studio, spring 2014

Using three planes to construct a series of spaces, the Red River Retreat housing units are developed with a purist approach to the site. The goal was to create units, which blend in with their environment and impact the site as little as possible. Columns were seen as solely structural elements, and were set on a rigid grid opposing the rest of the unit and site. The planes are entirely separate from the structural columns. The planes were allowed to shift so that implied private, semi-private, and public spaces were made throughout the unit. The 320 square foot units are oriented to face the water allowing each unit to become a waterfront property. Exterior deck space is nearly equal in square footage to interior space, emphasizing the focus of the retreat. People who are going to the Red River Gorge are there to experience its beauty, and these units are made precisely to allow that to happen through study of structure and envelope.
